NJ VOICES – SHENEMAN’S SKETCHPAD – Pfizer pfined
2.3 billion $ settlement reached Wednesday for illegally marketing 13 drugs.
More specifically, Pfizer Illegally promoted 4 drugs, and caused false claims to be submitted to government health care programs for uses that were not FDA approved.
Allegations have been made of bribes paid by Pfizer to health care providers to induce them to prescribe Bextra, an anti-inflammatory drug, Geodon, an antipsychotic, Zyvox, an anti-biotic, and Lyrica, an epilepsy treatment.
Pfizer also reported paid out kickbacks to market certain big name drugs: Aricept, Celebrex, Lipitor, Norvasc, Relpax, Viagra, Zithromax, Zoloft and Zyrtec.
4 + 9 = 13.
This 2.3 billion $ settlement is a record.
1.2 billion $ of this is a criminal fine, the largest ever in any criminal case.
A portion of the 1 billion $ in civil penalty will be distributed over 49 states.
6 inside informant whistleblowers (5 Pfizer workers and 1 Pennsylvania doctor) will be receiving anywhere from 2.3 million $ to 55.5 million $ of the settlement apiece. This is in the dividing of a 102 million $ pie that was set aside just for them.
Pfizer will be monitored by the Health and Human Services Department’s inspector general for the next 5 years.
This is Pfizers 4th settlement involving illegal marketing since 2002.
