Drugged Toddler Numbers Double

Reuters news service has a story out now on a study showing the number of children 2 to 5 years old diagnosed Bipolar and prescribed powerful psychiatric drugs has doubled in the past 10 years.

The research suggests that while it is still rare to prescribe powerful psychiatric drugs to 2-year-olds, the practice is becoming more frequent.

The terrible twosomes has apparently become a diagnosable disease.

Not to become overly alarmed…

“The psychiatric diagnosis of very young children is anything but an exact science,” said Harry Tracy, a psychologist and publisher of NeuroInvestment, a monthly publication specializing in central nervous system disorders.

…perhaps you’re child is just two.

It is reported that the drug manufacturers are doing a brisk business though.

If a child is diagnosed with bipolar disorder between the ages of 2 and 5, about half are prescribed an antipsychotic, such as Eli Lilly & Co’s Zyprexa, AstraZeneca Plc’s Seroquel, and Johnson & Johnson’s Risperdal. They are prescribed to about one in 3,000 2-year-olds, according to his [Mark Olfson’s] report.

You shouldn’t blame children for being children, although you might blame parents for not being parents, especially when the children are 2 – 5 years old.

Let me reiterate what I’ve said before on more than one occasion: labeling children seriously mental ill, and doping them up on harmful psychiatric drugs, constitutes child abuse, and it should not be tolerated.
